Best 10 things to do in Bela krajina region in Slovenia
Bela Krajina (White Carniola) is one of the most beautiful regions in Slovenia. It is located in the southest of the country, at the Croatian border. It is famous from the pristine, unspoiled nature and amazing landscapes. Bela Krajina looks like the fairytale, with its mountains, rivers, trees and rural areas.
Even though this region of Slovenia is not highly developed, there are surprisingly many things to do there!
Visiting Čebelarstvo Veselič- the world of honey
Čurile 4a 8330 Metlika
Getting to know the process of making the honey, learning about bees and their fascinating hierarchy is something we will never forget. Did you know that bees are communicating by… a dance? They are flying in different directions to show their colleagues the way to the nearest flowers. Sometimes they also communicate by the kiss that has the enzymes with the specific information.
Another interesting fact is that the Queen and other bees are clones. They were identical at the beginning but their DNA changed because of the different… diet! The bees are choosing which one of them will be the queen. They are giving her the best food and the highest quality of products. She can live up to 5 years, whereas her sisters are dying after 6 months or less.
After learning all these fascinating things about bees, you can buy products made of honey in Čebelarstvo Veselič. Our personal favourite is medica, delicious honey liquor.
Degustating local beer at Vizir Brewery
Lokve 10 b, 8340 Črnomelj
Vizir is one of the oldest breweries in Slovakia. They produce different kinds of beer, mostly Ales. If you book your visit in advanced, you can have a degustation at the factory. The owner is really friendly and speaks English very well, so you won’t have any problems with the communication.
Our favourite beer by Vizir is SuperStar. You need to try it, even though you are not visiting Bela Krajina. It is available in many shops and bars in Slovenia, especially those in Ljubljana.
Buying local oil at Oljarna Pečarič
Drašiči 33, 8330 Metlika
Oljarna Pečarič is a truly unique place. They are producing the best oil in Slovenia. The most famous is the walnut one. You can also buy there also other oil, including hazelnut, grape, wild rose, sunflower, thistle, linseed, cannabis and many more.
The food at Bela Krajina is REALLY delicious. It is based on meat, potatoes and bread. If you are a vegetarian, don’t worry- you can have tasty trout caught in the Kolpa river.
There are two restaurants worth recommending at White Carniola. The first is Gostilna Veselič with friendly, charismatic owner who will tell you awesome stories about the region.
The other great restaurant is Gostilna Muller in Črnomelj.
We’ve been dining in both of these places and enjoyed the food every time we went there.
Kayaking on the Kolpa river
It is probably one of the best things to do in Bela Krajina! Kayaking on the peaceful Kolpa river is very relaxing.
You will hear nothing but the singing of birds and quiet rush of the water…
Trying lavender chocolate & liquors at Berryshka factory
Obrh 17a, Dolenjske Toplice 8350
It is not located at Bela Krajina but very close to it.
Berryshka is a producer of famous chocolates and liquors. All their products are awesome but the thing we liked the most are chocolate shot glasses.
You can drink your favorite alcohol and then eat your ‘glass’. How awesome it that?
Rafting on the Kolpa river
Srednji Radenci 2, 8342 Stari trg ob Kolpi
Something for adventure lovers. Kolpa river is a natural border between Croatia and Slovenia. Rafting is not difficult there but it’s still quite challenging!
We had so much fun there! The river is very clear, so in the summer you can just jump into the water to cool off. The tour is really picturesque, you are rafting surrounded by the beautiful, unspoilt nature.
Seeing military plane DC-3
Otok, 8330 Metlika
We were really surprised when we saw the big military plane in the middle of nowhere. It is situated on the fields and has quite interesting history.
Going to springs of the Krupa river
Krupa, 45° 38′ 05.14″ N, 15° 13′ 00.46″ E
Springs of the Krupa river are one of the best places that we’ve seen in Bela Krajina. There are located in the small village and most tourist don’t know about it.
We loved this place! It was so peaceful and quiet, that we could spend hours, just sitting and relaxing there.
Visiting Gradac castle
Gradac, 45°36′48.59″N 15°14′46.38″E
You are not visiting Bela Krajina to see the museums or the monuments. Gradac castle is an exception. It is really old (from 13th century!) and quite… scary. It was abandoned years ago, so you can see the old furniture and equipment through the broken windows.
