Wat Rong Khun – Thailand’s White Temple in Chiang Rai
Wat Rong Khun is one of the most beautiful temple we have seen in Thailand. It’s situated in the Northern Thailand in Chiang Rai city.
Wat Rong Khun temple is big and all white. What is interesting- this is not public but PRIVATE temple, owned by Chalermchai Kositpipat, 60-year old Thai artist, born in Chiang Rai province.
The temple is pretty new, open to public in 1997.
Why we loved Wat Rong Khun so much? Because it is full of symbols.
1. The cycle of rebirth bridge.
At the entrance to the temple, you will see dozens of grey hands and that symbolize man’s desires. You need to reject all human temptations in order to attain happiness.
2. Gate of Heaven.
At the end of The Cycle of Rebirth Bridge, you will find the Gate of Heaven, guarded by Death and Rahu, two creatures that decide on the fate of the dead people.
3. The main building- Ubosot.
Now something surprising. Inside the white temple you will see images of… Harry Potter, Hello Kitty or even Superman.
It is pretty weird but it is the symbol of human wickedness.
At the end the most important symbol- the white color of the temple. It’s the color of perfection, the most complete and pure of all tones. White is the color of purity, wholeness and innocence.
Wat Rong Khun is must-see for everybody visiting Chiang Rai. It is unforgetable and beautiful. It is very rare to see the private temple with so many symbols.
Entrance is free but the proper outfit is strictly verified. You need to cover your arms and knees in order to get inside the temple.
