Turkey has always been on my bucket list for quite some time now. This country with its rich history, diverse culture, and breathtaking landscapes has always fascinated me. The palace grounds, opulent rooms, and breathtaking views of the Bosphorus were a sight to behold.
Of course, no visit to Istanbul would be complete without a stop at the Grand Bazaar. This massive market is a maze of shops selling everything from spices and textiles to ceramics and jewellery. I spent hours wandering through the vibrant stalls, picking up a few treasures to take home.
Cappadocia a fairytale landscape
After my exciting explorations of Istanbul, it was time to head to Cappadocia. I had read and seen pictures of Cappadocia but I was not prepared for the sights here. Its otherworldly landscape of fairy chimneys, rock formations, and cave dwellings was unlike anything I’d ever seen.
On my first day, I explored the Goreme Open-Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring ancient rock-cut churches with well-preserved frescoes. Walking through the caves, I felt like I had stepped back in time.
The next morning was the most magical part of my trip, a hot air balloon ride over the valleys of Cappadocia. Floating above the stunning landscape at sunrise was an experience I’ll never forget. The sight of hundreds of colourful balloons filling the sky, with the sun casting a golden glow over the rock formations, was simply breathtaking.
The cotton castle Pamukkale
The next stop on my Turkey adventure was Pamukkale, famous for its white terraces of thermal pools. Famously known as the “Cotton Castle,” Pamukkale is a natural wonder that feels almost surreal. Walking barefoot on the terraces, with the warm mineral-rich water flowing around me, was incredibly soothing.
I also ventured to the ancient city of Hierapolis, which sits above Pamukkale. The ruins of the Roman baths, temples, and a well-preserved amphitheatre provided a fascinating glimpse into Turkey’s rich history.
Ephesus: a walk through ancient history
One of the most memorable parts of my tour of Turkey was visiting the ancient city of Ephesus. As someone who loves history, I was blown away by the scale and preservation of the ruins. Walking through the Marble Streets, past the Celsus Library, and standing in the Great Theatre where ancient performances were held, I could almost picture life as it was thousands of years ago.
The Temple of Artemis which is now one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is now in ruins. I also visited the House of the Virgin Mary, believed to be the final resting place of Mary.
Sun, sea, and relaxation at Bodrum
After all the history and exploration, I was ready for some relaxation, and Bodrum provided the perfect escape. This coastal city is known for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lively marina. I spent my days lounging by the Aegean Sea, taking in the sun and enjoying the laid-back vibe of the town.
I also had the chance to explore the Bodrum Castle, which houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. The views from the castle, overlooking the turquoise waters, were stunning. Bodrum was the perfect way to end my Turkish adventure, offering the right mix of relaxation and culture.
