The Most Romantic Places in Portugal
When you think about the perfect gateways for lovers in Europe, the first places that come to your mind probably are Paris, Rome, London or Venice. Of course, these cities are amazing but they are sometimes too crowded and overrated. How many times can you visit the Eiffel tower or take a gondola ride? If you are looking for something different, unique and still undiscovered, this post is for you. There are so many romantic things to do in Lisbon that it’s definitely one of the best destinations in Europe for couples.
Visiting Portugal’s capital will make you fall in love with this city and (hopefully) deepen the relationship with your partner. Here are the most romantic things to do in Lisbon:
Wander Around The Historical Centre Of Lisbon
The center of Lisbon is stunningly beautiful. Strolling around the narrow and steep streets is a great idea for the date. The colorful buildings and amazing monuments makes Lisbon one of the most romantic cities in Europe.
If you are interested in history, it’s worth to read more about the capital of Portugal. In 1755 it was almost completely destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami. During the reconstruction process, the leader of the project was asked why he wants the streets to be so wide. He answered: one day, they will be narrow.
Sunbathe (Even In The Winter!)
Did you know that there is never cold in Lisbon? The city is located on the coast, so the negative temperatures are very unlikely to occur there.
Even in the coldest months like December or January, it’s sunny in the capital of Portugal. All of the photos that you can see in this post are taken in the winter. Some days were warm enough to wear only t-shirts and shorts!
What can be more romantic than spending time with someone you love in a place like this? Lisbon is the city of never-ending summer that’s what makes it beautiful.
Take A Sunset Cruise
What can be better than watching the sun goes down with your partner? Taking a sunset cruise is one of the most romantic things to do in Lisbon for couples.
You will have a chance to see the city from a completely different perspective. Plus, it’s quite affordable, so you can buy the tickets even if your budget is tight.
Take Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour
There is something magical about Lisbon… The atmosphere of this city is amazing. When the sun is shining and you hear the sound of the ocean, you really can feel the love in the air.
You can either walk around or join a bus tour to get to know more about Portugal and its capital. There are two options available: a traditional hop on hop off bus or the Caravel on Wheels.
I recommend the second one, as they are offering an interactive tour with historical insights. You are not leaving the vehicle for almost two hours- you have a display in front of you and earphones to hear all the important information.
Try Portuguese Food
Hands down, food is one of the important parts of traveling. We all love trying local specialties. Portuguese cuisine is really awesome, so it won’t be disappointing even for the most demanding tourists.
Because of the direct access to the ocean, Portugal is famous for its seafood. Add to it the olives, cheese, and fresh bread, and you will have a perfect meal.
If you have a sweet tooth, you will love Portuguese desserts. The most famous is Pastel de nata, a custard tart. Even though you can buy it almost everywhere in the country, the most famous (and arguably the best) are being sold in Pastéis de Belém pastry shop in Lisbon.
Taste Portuguese Wine
Portuguese wine is one of the best in the world. No wonder why- it really is delicious.
Take a chance on your stay in Lisbon, and invite your partner for a wine tasting tour!
Take A Day Trip To Sintra and Cabo da Roca
There are many awesome places to visit close to Lisbon. The most famous (and unfortunately, the most crowded one) is Sintra. It’s a beautiful town listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
The other place, that is less known to the tourist is Cabo da Roca. It’s the westernmost point of continental Europe. You can see it on the photo above- doesn’t it look heartbreakingly beautiful?
Take A Yellow Tram Ride
There is always a lot going on in Lisbon! The absolute best thing to do in Lisbon for couples is to take a ride by an old, yellow tram (number #28 or #12). It’s going around the historic center and it’s pretty impressive how easily it goes through the narrow and steep streets.
The yellow tram became a symbol of Lisbon- you can see it on almost every postcard from the city.
Watch The Ocean Waves
Lisbon is located onshore of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s one of the few European capitals that have direct access to the open water. That makes it pretty unique and of course… romantic! In case you want to relocate to Lisbon, you will love the fact that you may go to beach every day.
Looking at the ocean with someone you love and listening to the sound of waves is a great idea for the perfect date.
The other awesome thing about Lisbon is that it’s situated in the south of Portugal. It’s one of the warmest parts of the country.
Where To Stay In Lisbon?
Lisbon is NOT an expensive city. Eating a meal in a good restaurant won’t cost you more than 10 euro. All the tourist attractions are affordable and the hotels are inexpensive.
Speaking of the accommodation- we have been staying at Hotel Lisboa Plaza that belongs to the Heritage Hotels group. It’s one of the most romantic hotels in Lisbon: located in the heart of the city, with beautiful rooms, luxurious interiors, and amazing staff, they will satisfy even the most demanding travelers.

Wow, exactly what we needed for our Lisbon trip, hopefully end of spring. We heard already so many great things about this city but it is one of the places we still missed to see in Europe.
So obviously there is not really anything negative to say about Lisbon. Weather, people, food… and all for pretty low prices. Cant wait to see this place and thanks for the great inspiration :)
That’s true- everything about Lisbon is perfect :)
hmmm…pastel de Nata, my favorite! My grandmother used to make them for us when I was little, she is from Lisbon. You sure are right, Portuguese people are the friendliest people. I’ve been thinking about moving to Lisbon for awhile now, perhaps in a few years time. There is not a single person I know that has not loved Lisbon!
It’s impossible to not love Lisbon, indeed!
I didn’t know Lisbon has tropical beach like climate and such delicious food. I had not thought of putting it very high on my bucket list but now I will be moving it up. Thanks for sharing. We will plan a trip end of the year next time. Will it be too crowded then?
It is the most crowded in the summer, so it should be fine at the end of the year.
We spent a month in Lisbon this summer and honestly just didn’t get to like the place. Why? The major reason were TOO many tourists (I know, it’s Europe in summer…but even then there were way too many tourists). We also found Central Lisbon is geared to the short-stay tourist but not to the slow traveller (we found buying basics very inconvenient). Finally, although pretty, Lisbon didn’t blow us away. We left Lisbon after a month and went to Sevilla…that blew us away.
Maybe we were influenced primarily by all the tourists…but we just never felt anything for Lisbon which disappointed us because we had high hopes.

It’s interesting you didn’t like Lisbon. Maybe you are right that it’s because of the crowds… When we were there in December, it was not that busy.
I’m headed to Lisbon in a few days :) Really am looking forward to it, have wanted to visit the city for a while already! I think I’ll add Cabo de Roca to my list of things to do :)
I’ve heard so many good things about Lisbon, I can’t wait to visit. As a lover of warm weather, olives and all things seafood it sounds like the perfect spot. Thanks for this post. Good info and gorgeous pics.
Exactly, Paris and Italy definitely come to our mind when we think of Europe. But, Lisbon definitely looks beautiful. And with those cheap accommodations, even I would like to add this one to my list. Thanks for sharing.
I have seen so many wonderful photos of Lisbon this last ear that it is on my list to stay! I have to go this year and take my husband. He probably wont love all the walking – but he will enjoy the adventure
just booked a week stay in November. Cannot wait …
