We can all be fearful of something in life, and in some cases, we have every right to be. Fear can prevent us from doing something we later regret so we shouldn’t always assume it’s a bad thing. But let’s talk about it in the context of traveling.
When you travel the world, you open yourself up to opportunities and experiences that could change your life, so you shouldn’t let fear get in the way. But so many people do. Travel fears are wide and many, and when people succumb to them, they limit the scope of the adventure they could be having.
This can cause regrets later when they sit at home looking through their travel photos. “Here’s another picture of us sat beside the poolside” somebody might say to their friend and neighbor, while slowly realizing that their time away was far less interesting than it could have been.
So, don’t let your travel adventure be a boring one. Don’t let fear get in the way. Take note of these common travel fears and…well…do what you can to overcome them!
The Fear Of Getting Lost
Travel is all about taking the roads less traveled. It’s about exploring the unknown and not following behind the barrage of tourists. Who knows what you might find when you venture somewhere new.
It could be nothing at all but then again you might find a scenic backdrop of unique beauty or part of the country’s wildlife that is normally hidden from view. Now, there is nothing wrong with hitting all of the usual tourist spots of course. But the fear of getting lost shouldn’t limit your travel adventure as you might find something that wouldn’t normally be printed on a postcard!
Thankfully, you don’t have to get lost, even when you venture off the beaten path. You can take advantage of the GPS apps on your phone so you need never get lost again. Assuming you haven’t forgotten to charge your phone before venturing out, you will be able to find your way back to your hotel, be you in your car or exploring the world on foot.
The Fear Of Doing Something Daring
Sure, you could sit beside the pool all day with a cocktail in one hand and the latest bestseller in the other. But what if there was something else you could be doing with your time? What if you could be doing something that could push you out (or way out) of your comfort zone?
There are bound to be activities you can take part in that are out of your normal routine, so commit to a Google search when you’re planning your itinerary.
From cage diving with sharks when looking at things to do in Cape Town to skydiving from the Grand Canyon as part of your US tour, there are all kinds of things you could push yourself into doing. Sure, some activities can appear terrifying but imagine the exhilaration you will feel during and after your feat of daring. “Here’s a picture of me kayaking down the rapids” you can tell your disbelieving friend when you regale them with your travel adventures.
The Fear Of Unknown Foods
When looking at the menu in another country you are bound to find foods that you aren’t familiar with. Some of them can also look unappealing so you can’t always be blamed for turning certain dishes down. Take a look at some of these weird foods from around the world, for example, which include fried insects such as wasp crackers and steamed silkworms.
Yum! However, you might be missing out on something that could revolutionize your taste buds, so you shouldn’t ignore every food you are presented with. Sure, red ant chutney might sound disgusting, but don’t knock it until you have tried it!
So, don’t go for your usual hamburger and fries, even if they are front and center on the menu. Dare to eat something new as you might just discover your new favorite food in the process. “Oh, this cheese tastes lovely,” your next-door neighbor will later say to you. “What was it?” “Oh, just a recipe I picked up from my time in Italy,” you can tell them, before revealing that it was made out of the live larvae of cheese flies!
If you’re intent on having a travel adventure, have an adventure! Don’t sit on the beach 24/7 using your partner as an impromptu pillow! Overcome your fears and do something new, as you will create memories that will last you a lifetime. Just imagine what you will be able to tell your friends when you’re later back home!
