Travel tips for visiting Liberec in Czech Republic
Let’s face it- Prague is awesome but it has limited tourist attractions. We have been to the capital of Czech Republic so many times that we needed to start searching for less known places in this country. Last month we have been to Karlovy Vary and we though that visiting Liberec, another town in the Northern Czech Republic, would be a perfect ending for our road trip through Austria and Slovenia.
We were right! Liberec is a beautiful city with lots of tourist attractions. It’s situated only 1 hour driving from the capital which makes it a perfect weekend gateway from Prague.
Things to know before visiting Liberec
The location of Liberec is great- it is situated very close to the border with Poland and Germany.
It is 3th largest city in Czech Republic with the population of 150,000 inhabitants (including the neighbouring Vratislavice and Jablonec and Nisou). The best hotels (that you can book on Wego) and restaurants in Liberec are owned by Pytloun Group- that is why you will read a lot about them in this article.
The city is called The Manchester of Bohemia because its strong textile industry.

We love places like IQlandia! You can spend hours there, having fun and learning about the world. This interactive, science museum is one of the main tourist attractions in Liberec. It is great spot to visit for people of all ages, including children.

Visiting the zoo is always a good idea, no matter when you are in the world. This in Liberec is very interesting, with red panda and white tiger as the main attractions.
The zoo is located 2 kilometres from the Old Town and you can easily get there by the public transport (tram #2 and #3).
náměstí Doktora Edvarda Beneše 1/1, 460 01 Liberec
Town Hall is our personal favourite for visiting Liberec- it is definitely the most beautiful building in the city. It was built in 19th and is located in the heart of Old Town. There are only few days a year where the Town Hall is open to public, so you will probably only see it from the outside.
Fountain of Neptune
náměstí Doktora Edvarda Beneše 1/9, 460 01 Liberec
The fountain was standing in the centre of Liberec throughout the ages. In 19th century the wooden one was replaced by the new, made of stone.
The Fountain of Neptune is located in front of the Town Hall, so it is very easy to find for all the tourists visiting Liberec.
Church of Saint Anthony the Great (Kostel Svateho Antonina Velikeho)
Kostelni 9/7, Liberec 460 01
Built in 16th century, Kostel Svateho Antonina Velikeho is the most beautiful church in Liberec and one of the most important monuments in the city. It is located just few steps from the Town Hall.

Even though the castle in Liberec is not open to public, it is still worth a visit to see it from the outside. You can walk there from the centre of Old Town- it won’t take more than 10 minutes. Zámek is really big- it was impossible to take photo of the entire building!
Horní Hanychov, 460 08 Liberec
Jested is the most famous tourist attraction in Liberec, especially for locals. It is a mountain with the big tower on the top. You can either hike up there or take a cable car.
When we were visiting Liberec, the weather was really bad… Even though we went to Jested, the visibility was very poor. The best photo that we could take is the one below.
Where to stay while visiting Liberec?
We have been staying at Imperial Pytloun. We absolutely loved it! It is a four star hotel located in the heart of the city, within the walking distance to the Town Hall, IQ Landia and all the other important tourist attractions of Liberec.
Even though the hotel is situated in the historical building, it is quite new. All the rooms are available to book from 2015. There is a parking available right across the street for all the guests. The WiFi is fast and stable. There’s always a lot going on in the hotel. When we were there we’ve been attending the jazz concert, which was great!
Imperial Pytloun has two kind of rooms to choose from: standard and design. The first group meet all the criteria of four star hotel, like having comfy bed or access to the fast WiFi.
The second part are the design rooms. There are more than amazing! Each of them is completely different, it has unique style and interior. We have been staying at On the Wave designed by Ondřej Kamenický. The room 301 was inspired by the moves of waves, so all the contours were kind of rippling. The bathroom wall has crescent shape and we had an awesome wooden slide from the bed.
You can choose the room you want to stay in before the arrival or it will be assigned to you randomly. To be honest, we spent more than an hour in search for the design we liked the most. All of the rooms were so tempting! There is even Fifity shades of Grey room at Imperial Liberec. How awesome is that?
Love the breakfast at Imperial Pytloun Hotel! First of all- the food is delicious and everybody will find something fro themselves there. You have some basics like bread, pastries, bacon and eggs but there are also extraordinary things like freshly squeezed juices. Secondly- the restaurant has huge windows, so you can watch the street while having a breakfast.
Last but not least- the seats are really comfy and the overall atmosphere of Zlatý Kohout is great. We’ve been there for a dinner few times and it was great.
Where to eat while visiting Liberec?
Saiko is a gem of Liberec. It’s different from all the other restaurants in the town. You can eat there delicious Asian food, more specifically meals from Japanese and Thai cuisines. They are really delicious! You can see the short video from our dinner at Saiko restaurant below.
Pytloun is the best restaurant to try authentic Czech cuisine. Everything made of pork, beef and chicken plus famous bread dumplings.
If you like eating hearty, big meals that is the place for you!
If you like Mediterranean food, you’ll love Oro. It has short but very good menu. In the summer, you can sit outside on the terrace and enjoy the nice view of the city. It is one of the coolest places in Liberec.
Disclosure: We want to thank Pytloun Imperial Hotel for complimentary stay. All opinions presented in this post are honest and our own.
